It was supposed to be one of the most exciting times in young Mary Apick's life. The Iranian actress and child star had just won the best actress award at the Moscow International Film Festival. After accepting the award she was traveling in America when she got the call. The Shah of Iran was deposed; don't come home, her mother said. She stayed in Los Angeles and worked under the table while trying to rebuild her career. At the height of the Iran hostage crisis she came close to landing acting jobs, until people found out she was Iranian. Then, doors closed. Over the subsequent quarter century Mary tenaciously rebuilt her career to new heights. Recently she wrote and starred in "Beneath the Veil," which she performed at both the Kennedy and Lincoln Centers.
