A small incense burner that hold incense burned to pray for the dead is placed amongst the elegantly mouldering architecture in the Từ Hiếu Pagoda cemetery near Huế, Vietnam. Ancestor worship is an important aspect of traditional Vietnamese religion, but because eunuchs would father no children, they would not receive veneration from decendants in the afterlife. Therefore, the eunuchs contributed money to the sustainance of the Từ Hiếu Pagoda and were buried there and would be prayed for by the monks. People continue to pray for the eunuchs in the cemetery. The temple is also the root temple of the Zen master Thích Nhất Hạnh, living in exile in France.
