There is no word for tunnel in the Buyi language. Lu Deqing calls it “the long cave.” Lu, at left, is dressed in her finest as she and the other village ladies visit the entrance where the tunnel meets the bridge platform. They are proud of the bridge and the fact that it spans over their valley. They sing songs praising its beauty and hope the bridge will bring some good to their lives.

Private investors have already contacted bridge engineer Zhou. They want to invest 70 to 80 million yuan to develop the Baling River valley. Their plans include building a luxury hotel, theme park and a glass restaurant with river views. Activities will include paragliding and bungee jumping. Tourists will want to see the local minorities and have them sing and dance for their entertainment, wearing satin and sequined parodies of their traditional clothing.
