The Mazu icon is carried in procession out of the Wenxing Mazu Temple.

The origin of Mazu’s fame rests on the myth of her saving her brothers who were caught in a typhoon. One day while her brothers and father were out fishing Mazu, intuiting their danger, fell into a trance. In this trance she saved her brothers from drowning. Mazu’s mother, thinking she was asleep shook her. In the moment of disruption, Mazu’s trance state was broken and she dropped her father into the sea where he died.
